What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is when you sell a product or service of another company and earn a commission when someone makes a purchase.
These commissions are set by the company owners either by a fixed amount or a percentage of the product sale.
Commission often ranges anywhere from 10% -75% of the sales that you make.
You heard me right, YES!! commissions up to 75% !!
So, if you are wondering why would someone pay you a high commission for a sale.
The answer is simple, you are doing most of the hard work to let the people know about their products and driving visitors to their sales page.
Product owners create the product once and all done. But affiliate marketers do the hardest part which is driving traffic to the website or sales page.
Affiliate companies also have pretty high commissions to remain competitive. They want you to promote THEIR product or service rather than their competition’s, so they keep their commissions competitively priced.
For example, I am an affiliate for Create and go team’s course Six-Figure Blogger where they teach everything about making passive income by creating and selling digital products.
How does affiliate marketing work?
An Affiliate Marketing Program involves three parties to construct a marketing framework.
These three entities are responsible for channelizing the Affiliate Marketing Framework, so let us understand one by one:
A Merchant can be any brand, company, or retailer, or service provider. It is the central entity of the affiliate program which creates products or services.
It also can be an individual who creates online courses which be kind of educational courses or career development services.
A merchant can be someone who creates a product or service and wants to sell in the online market.
Publishers can be an affiliate, advertiser, or distributor, even you can become an affiliate who acts as a promoter among Merchant and Customer.
Let’s consider you have joined Merchant’s affiliate program (Merchant can be any major organization or brand) with the intention of promoting their products and every customer purchases your recommended product or service, you will get some percentage of commission.
It is highly recommended, affiliate marketers try that product or service before and sell only those products that are relevant to the customer’s needs because quality is the first priority of any buyer.
A Customer is a consumer who gives the actual results in the affiliate program. The Publisher or Affiliate Marketer will try to market the product to the customer to get the benefit while the customer purchases your referred product.
Without successful deals, there are no commissions or rewards that will be shared among the merchant and affiliate marketer.
How to become an Affiliate Marketer?
After knowing the basic fundamentals of Affiliate Marketing, now it is time to take action.
To become an affiliate of any company, you need to first join their affiliate programs and get approved by them.
After getting approved, you need to login to the dashboard area to get the affiliate links of the product’s sales page.
There are four steps that will help you become a successful affiliate marketer for any affiliate program:
1. Choose the right Affiliate Program
Affiliate Program is an incentivized program created by companies for promoting their products or services.
Not all companies offer affiliate programs. However, the majority of them have this wonderful scheme to be a part of.
That being said, we need to ensure joining companies that have a good reputation in the market and financial stability.
Although there are many major companies in the market, I’ve listed out the best affiliate marketing programs and networks for you.
There is no charge of joining an affiliate program, however, the overall cost is based upon what kind of promotional technique you are using such as content marketing, email marketing, PPC, Google Adwords, etc.

2. Select a Product or Service to Promote
After joining the affiliate program, the second thing you have to consider is what kind of product or services you’re going to promote.
These can be from any category such as Fashion & Grooming Products, Tech Gadgets, Travel, Home, digital products, or anything else.
Before promoting any product the best practice is to review the product by yourself to see if the product is worth the money.

This is because if the product quality is bad, you should never promote it to others, that way you’ll never lose trust from people.
3. Platform to Promote a Product or Service
When you’ve selected the category of the product you are good to go. After selecting the product you’ll get a special link to start promoting.
Where to Promote affiliate products?
Promotion platforms can be your blog/website. You can even create a review video of the product and publish it to your YouTube channel.
Email marketing and social media platforms are other ways to promote your blog and affiliate links.
In the next few paragraphs, you will learn how to get into affiliate marketing and how to make money through affiliate marketing with a website.
It is not necessary to have a blog or website, but having a blog is considered the BEST promotional method.
Even though you can use services like PPC (Pay Per Click), I highly recommend starting a blog if you haven’t already because sales can be easily achieved by writing a review about a product that you like.
Now, you would be wondering, how to make money with PPC affiliate marketing?
Don’t worry! I’ll explain it here.
With PPC advertising, ads will be displayed on your website and you will be paid whenever someone clicks on them.
Companies are paying Google (and other search engines) to advertise through their ad network. Google then automatically chooses relevant sites within their network on which to place their ads: this could be your website.
The ads that Google will display on your website will depend on a variety of different factors and will fluctuate depending on the industry and topic of the page.
In the last step you will be getting rewarded whenever anyone purchases the product from your affiliate link, the commission rate is based on what category of product you are promoting.
Even if you have a normal day job, you can generate passive income through affiliate marketing consistently.
The most commonly asked question is how Merchant tracks who is sending traffic to the product or service and making sales?
How is a sale made? – A Question that everyone wonders.
The sales are monitored by tracking URL which is called an affiliate link that is unique for each product.
When a visitor clicks on your affiliate link, it’ll be redirected to the sales page of the merchant site and a cookie will be placed on the browser.
Many of the companies set a cookie period anywhere from 30-365 days.
Now, when he/she buys that product or service within the mentioned cookie period, you are eligible for the commission of the sale you make.
Important Note: In order for this cookie to work, the person has to purchase from the same device and the same browser.
Plus, if your visitor clicks on another affiliate link that isn’t yours and then purchases the product, the affiliate whose link was last clicked will get the credit for the sale – not you.
You can receive your payment via cheque transfer, Paypal, or any other payment mode.
Most companies will pay between 30-90 days after the sale is made that is to make sure no return or refunds are requested.
Here is an example – I am an affiliate for Aweber, an email marketing service that I recommend to all fellow bloggers.
(If you choose to sign up using this above link, I may get a commission without any additional cost to you).
This statement above is called disclosure.
Why affiliate marketing is the best way to start monetizing
Affiliate marketing provides the best balance of risk and money. This is the #1 reason why people prefer affiliate marketing.
Putting up ads on your website is the easiest way to make money because it’s easy to set up to earn passive income
But the problem is…
The reward that you get through ads is the lowest. You can only make pennies rather than dollars.
On the other end, creating and selling your own products is the best way to make a fortune from your website.
But the problem is..
It comes with the highest risk. What does that mean?
You need to spend a lot of time and money to create your own products. If you create a product that your audience doesn’t like or you don’t know how to sell it well, then you’ve wasted all your money and time.
That’s why affiliate marketing is the easiest and risk-free avenue to make passive income.
Neither you need to create a product nor earn a low income. You can cherry-pick the best products that provide a good commission and your audience’s love at the same time.
How to get started with affiliate marketing
The best and efficient way to get started with affiliate marketing is to start adding affiliate links to the articles on your blog.
In the above section, I have listed out the best affiliate marketing programs and networks.
However, I think Amazon’s affiliate is the best affiliate program, to begin with, because of the popularity of the platform and you can easily generate passive income with them.
The Amazon associates program allows you to link amazon products and earn a commission when someone makes a purchase.

That being said, they are still a great way to earn a passive couple of hundred dollars if you’re just starting out with affiliate marketing.
In addition to linking Amazon products, you can do a quick Google search in your niche for affiliate programs.
For example, Let’s say you are in the Yoga niche and run a google search “Yoga affiliate program”. There you’ve many affiliate programs to choose from. Let’s pick Manduka affiliate program.
Open their website and check out their affiliate program. You want to make sure how their affiliate works, how they pay when they pay, and rules, etc.
You can join as many affiliate programs as you want but make sure the company and the products are a good fit for you and your audience.
I’ve written this affiliate marketing simplified guide to help you get started making your first buck.
